Our medical office recently implemented a new electronic medical records (EMR) solution to convert the thousands of pages of paper medical records into PDF format so we can securely save them on our server and easily access them with the click of a button.  As the office manager, I was put in charge of this monstrous task!

Our EMR vendor, Microwize Technology, provided us with several Fujitsu ScanSnap scanners as part of the EMR solution.  The training staff at Microwize was able to teach us how to use the scanners in about 10 minutes.  I was amazed!  I thought it would take days and weeks, but I was scanning documents within 30 minutes.  It’s so simple and fast.

We have now scanned thousands of pages that were taking up all of our storage area and filing cabinets.  We have reduced our storage costs by about $2,000 per month and have repurposed about 1,000 square feet of office space that had been used for filing cabinets and medical charts.  All this from a scanner that we bought for less than $500.

We are also really happy to reduce our paper consumption.  Prior to using the ScanSnap, we had to make copies of each patient’s forms when they came into our office.  Some patients had 100-200 pages of previous medical history.  Now we simply scan the papers into a PDF.  The doctors access the PDF through the EMR software and they never need to print a paper copy.  I never thought that being GREEN would save so much time and money.

Microwize also showed us how to use the ScanSnap to Scan-to-Print.  Now, anytime I need to copy a stack of papers, I just use the Scan-to-Print function and it prints on my laser printer.  This helped us replace the expensive copier that we were leasing for $300.  ScanSnap does the same job for a fraction of the cost.

With an EMR solution and Fujitsu ScanSnap scanners, our office is saving thousands of dollars each month.  This is the best product ever.  I love my ScanSnap!
