Traveling to a foreign country is always exciting! The sights, the food, the history, I love it! Moving to a foreign country is even more exciting and very paper intensive as I found out. I have worked for the Fujitsu scanner team in the US for 3 years now and was recently offered an assignment with Fujitsu in London for 2 years. I jumped at the opportunity and left on February 8th. Turns out, there is a ton of paperwork involved in transferring to a different country. I worked with our Human Resource Department in Sunnyvale, the British consulate in New York, banks, international CPA’s (in Utah) and attorneys to make the move and all of them had documents that needed to be signed. Even though I am a long time believer in scanning and paperless management of my business and personal information, I found a new value in scanning with my transition. My ScanSnap became invaluable as a way to get these documents to the right place in a format (PDF) that is widely acceptable from my home in Southern California. I also know that there will be other documents to process now that I arrived in London and ScanSnap will allow me to address those documents too.

I also have a plan in place for my personal information. My wife and kids won’t be moving to the UK to join me until after the school year ends so I installed a ScanSnap on my wife’s computer. She will be using it to send me any personal documents that need my attention. This will allow me to quickly address any non-work related documents. She loves the ScanSnap and I have even trained my two daughters (ages 8 and 10) how to use it. Actually this was the easiest part. Just hit the button and go! They found it useful in doing their homework as they can now use it to collaborate on projects with friends and then chat over Skype to get them completed. They even created and scanned a few pictures to send the grandparents via email, which was greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to receiving a few of these works of art while I am over there waiting for them to join me!

My plan is to continue to provide regular updates from Europe and provide some new perspectives on using a scanner while abroad. Stay tuned and keep scanning!
