Home Document Manager is a desktop application for Windows, and is designed with simplicity and efficiency in mind. It allows you to organize and search through your documents. To configure Home Document Manager and the ScanSnaps to work together, we must first configure ScanSnap Manager to scan directly to file.

Step 1 – First up, we need to disable the Quick Menu on the ScanSnap Manager icon. The ScanSnap Manager icon lives in your task bar, near your clock. Right click on this icon and make sure that “Use Quick Menu” is unchecked, as shown below.

Step 2 – Once you have disabled the Quick Menu, double click on the ScanSnap Manager icon in your task bar again, this will launch the Manager application.

Step 3 – Click “Add Profile” and enter a name for the new profile – I would suggest “Home Document Manager” as a sensible choice. Then click “OK” to create the new profile.

Step 4 – On the “Application” tab, select “Scan To File” from the drop down list.

Step 5 – Go to the “Save” tab. We need to choose a location for the scanned files – I would recommend using a new folder that isn’t used by any of the other ScanSnap Manager profiles. In this example, I have created a new folder on my machine at “C:\Users\Tim Haughton\Documents\Scans”, but you can create it wherever you like. Remember what you enter in here, you’ll need it later.

Step 6 – Go to the “File option” tab. We need to decide about OCR. Both the ScanSnaps and Home Document Manager have very good OCR capabilities. We have 2 options:

  1. We use the ScanSnap’s OCR. This will slow down scanning but speed up the import in to Home Document Manager.
  2. We use Home Document Manager’s OCR. This will speed up the scanning but slow down the import.

If you tend to 1 or 2 documents at a time, it doesn’t matter too much. If you tend to batch process a week’s (or month’s ??!!) paperwork at a time, you might find it easier to leave the “Searchable PDF” option disabled, and rely on Home Document Manager’s OCR. This will cut down on scanning times. Don’t forget that Home Document Manager will be busy OCR’ing while you are scanning.

That’s it. Now, documents scanned by your ScanSnap will now be imported directly into Home Document Manager.
